China accounted for nearly half of all global patent filings in 2024, submitting 1.8 million applications, an increase of 9% from the previous year, out of the global total of 3.7 million according to the latest report by the World Intellectual Property Organization. The United States and Japan followed as the second and third top filers. China also ranked first in industrial designs, utility models, plant varieties and trademarks registrations. This sweep across all major categories signals a deep, systemic drive to cement its status as a comprehensive global innovation powerhouse, moving beyond mere volume to mastery of the entire intellectual property landscape.
